Crab Nebula seen with its mysterious pulsar

A Pulsar is a spinning shell of star that remains once a star’s core collapses and rebounds to shine a supernova. After it’s titanic explosion a small spinning star with magnetic fields is created. Here is the best evidence and view of a pulsar in the famous Crab Nebula. The Pulsar is in the middle. Chinese astronomers witnessed the supernova explosion in 1054 AD

Venus Express spacecraft investigation finds atmospheric loss of hydrogen

It has long been known that Venus is hot with clouds high above in the atmosphere producing a greenhouse effect which traps heat . But underneath Venus' clouds, were there hot oceans or deserts / dry land? Then radar showed the landscape to be dry and arid with no water. Scientists understood that Venus had water, once like Earth but then lost its water. But the mystery was how ? Now the Venus Express spacecraft has made the first detection of an atmospheric loss process on Venus's day-side. The spacecraft has yielded data that revealed that most of the lostatmosphere escapes from the night-side. Planetary scientists are closer to understanding what happened to the water on Venus and all the processes that caused the water to disappear from Venus.

Biggest, brightest and closest Moon of the year

Tonights Moon is 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser Moons earlier in 2008. This occurs at perigee, the side of the Moon's elliptical orbit closest to Earth. Here is my picture of the event with my Canon Rebel taken through the trees with a nice moon halo surrounding it.

try to look for bright Geminid meteors starting tonight until this weekend

Yes that moon is bright over in the West near sunrise. It is located near the radiant (Gemini) before sunrise washing out everything in the sky particularly in the West but....

I stepped outside 6:10 Central am to get the newspaper. Well I happened to look up at the right time and saw a nice fat, yellow, zero magnitude Geminid flying across the Big Dipper.

Remember the brightest ones might be coming around 9 pm Earthgrazers so watch for them Dec 12- 14) Friday, Sat (Maxiumum) and Sunday night. These can appear all over the sky and are usually very long, very bright and can appear even in the areas that areas that are washed ouot by the moon. I am more interested in seeing the bright ones any way because those are the ones to remember this (and other showers ) yearly event.

Hope you see some. Please report any you see.

A spectacular (Perseid ) earthgrazer skimmed across the atmosphere near the Grand Tetons in August , 1972. Luckily it was caught on film.

JETS ON THE MOON ENCELADUS what makes them work?

Scientists continue to search for the cause of the geysers on Saturn's small
moon Enceladus. Geysers are visible as a large plume like stream of water vapor
and ice particles escaping the moon. Inside the plume are jets of dust and
gas. What actually causes/controls the jets is enigma. The Cassini
spacecraft continues to collect new data to look for ideas and actual conclusions.

The Leonid meteor shower peaked on the morning of 11/17/2008. While many in Asia and Europe saw significant higher then average meteoric rates, in Kansas I saw nothing due to clouds. I did however see one nice Leonid the morning before.
While that phenomenon was in the atmosphere, Light pillars danced in the sky lower to the Earth. They appear like ice crystal laden auroras but they are not.

Asteroid Destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah?

I thought this was rather interesting. Some simulated research after finding an ancient rock with writings and drawing possibly depicts an small asteroid fall in the Austrian alps many years ago. However the title does not say that but refers more that such an asteroidal fall may have destroyed the bilblical Sodom and Gomorrah. I would have preferred that they stick the facts and the rock they found then trying to make assumptions to a Sodom and Gomorrah destructive. If there were more evidence in a Middle Eastern land about such an asteroid fall , I would find it more plausible. However I go congratulate them on finding the stone and decoding it.

Leonids meteor shower 11/16 and 11/17 may be stronger then average

The famous Leonid meteor shower will peak Sunday starting 9 PM. While it is not supposed to be a meteor storm like 1966, 1999-2001, the rates are mentioned to be higher. At that time you can start to see earthgrazers which are usually brilliant and long meteors that skim the surface of the atmosphere. Just seeing one can be an awesome sight. More none earthgrazers will appear later on in the morning as the Leo constellation (looks like a big question mark in the south) rises higher and higher. We'll see what happens.

Tornado puzzle: what actually may trigger the hook signature on Dopplers

Are heavy rains the key for triggering tornadoes? Some scientists may have some
interesting correlations.

*Heavy Rain Triggers Destructive
Tornadoes<http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/08/22/tornado-rain.html>
*Michael Reilly, Discovery News

*Aug. 22, 2008* -- When the spring skies blacken over the Midwestern United
States and the clouds begin to rotate ominously, residents know a
tornado<http://science.howstuffworks.com/tornado.htm>could be on its
way.

But just how the deadly twisters form is a mystery that has puzzled
scientists for decades. They know a range of atmospheric conditions must be
in place, including strong, closely paired up- and downdrafts, windshear at
high altitudes, and usually a foreboding supercell thunderstorm, spinning
slowly in the sky.

Amid this stormy cocktail, new research suggests that the heavy rains that
often accompany supercells may be key in triggering
tornadoes<http://blogs.discovery.com/news_earth/2008/01/tornadoes-globa.html>to
form. According to Robert Davies-Jones of the National
Severe Storms Laboratory <http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/> in Oklahoma, rain
falling in heavy sheets from supercell storm cloud provides a strong push to
updrafting air, causing it to spin up into a fully fledged twister.

"You can have a rotating storm but until you have rain you don't get a
tornado," Robert Davies-Jones of the National Severe Storm Laboratory said.

Scientists have known this simple fact since 1953, when radar first allowed
meteorologists to peer into supercells. In tornadic storms, they noticed the
rain swirled into a hook shape. The feature, called a 'hook echo' quickly
became known as a tell-tale radar marker for a tornado.

But the swirling rain was regarded as a by-product of a tornado, merely the
effect of its powerful corkscrewing winds. Davies-Jones believes the
opposite may be true.

"The hook echo is usually thought to be a passive feature of tornadoes," he
said. "I'm saying it's not passive, it's an active mechanism for tornado
formation."

His work is published in the August issue of *Journal of the Atmospheric
Sciences*.

Davies-Jones ran computer simulations of supercell storms to see if falling
rain could provide the needed kick that turned diffuse updrafts rising off
the warm plains into tight-spinning, lethal tornadoes. As the rain
falls<http://science.howstuffworks.com/question479.htm>out of a
rotating supercell cloud it is also twisting, and as it falls he
found it transfers the rotational energy into the updrafting air adjacent to
it.

The rain also acts as a sort of wall, confining the swirling, rising air. As
it continues to head skyward the air inside the rain curtain stretches out
like a figure skater raising her arms. The spinning speeds up, and a tornado
is born.

"The mechanism is a good one," David Lewellen of the University of West
Virginia said. "But until these things are seen more conclusively out in the
field, it's not at all clear whether rain is involved in the formation of
most tornadoes, a few, or none at all."

Lewellen points out that rain is only one of myriad weather conditions that
have to be just right for a tornado to form. A massive field campaign of
experiments is scheduled for the spring season in 2009 and 2010 that he
hopes will determine if the implications in the models are correct.

Perseid meteor shower Thursdau Night and gorgeous Aquamarine fireball

A fireball is a meteor brighter then Venus (magnitude -2).

A friend and I camped out next to Powell Observatory.

There was a lot of activity then a lull. I lost time as I was plotting but it was a good night. But it was nice to see some bright ones including , a spectacular one , under the clearest skies I have seen this summer.

Date: 8/7-8/2008
Location. Louisburg, KC (Powell Observatory grounds south of Kansas City)
Time: 10:18-12:18 Central
sky conditions: to 5.5 mag clear (come clouds or fog on the Northern horizon 2nd hour)
Bert and I camped out and saw some nice meteors.

The rundown of 9 that I am posting
1- white blue
2-yellow
5-white
1- aqua green blue

Mags ranged from -3 to 4

5- Sporadic
3- Perseid
1- Kappa Cygnids

Mag -3 (1) ; +1 (2) ; +2 (5) ; +4 (1)_

Comments: The "star " of the show was a -3 aquamarine Perseid heading Northwest to the horizon (8 degrees) with a pronounced brightening along its path with a little flash near the end and a train (tail).
Possibly an earthgrazer that maybe someone in Iowa or Nebraka saw? It made my night!
Also once again (as I posted a few days ago) some meteors (3) seemed to traveled outward away from Casseiopia.
Could these be omicron-DRAconids?
Unfortunetly Bert was situated in the line of sight of a tree where this fireball went behind so he did not catch it :(
It was a beaut!

There are reports of clouds and rain coming so I hope things are okay so we can see the shower this coming weekend and to the 11th.

From Russia -gorgeous totality photo 2nd and 3rd contact superimposed.
Normally a picture or view like this is not possible. Why because these first contact photos appear at the beginning (2nd contact ) and end of totality (3rd contact).
Superimposing the images onto each other (stacking) made this gorgeous photo possible

Terrifying clouds

When an total eclipse is coming and the shadow is moving the last thing you want to see is clouds. I am glad that the clouds parted and observers in China saw totality!!!
8/4

http://www.spaceweather.com/

Sue and I saw the live event in Kansas , 6 am from the internet site on our
computers. The Blacksun chasers observe totality in
mostly cloudless event in Russia.

In China , clouds flitted over the sun but disappeared
mostly during totality. I am happy that the event was
successful for them, Corona and diamond ring and the
approaching darkness was shown.
It was nice to see the events in both places on the
computer and then later on CNN in China. Their replays
in the Exploratorium and NASA websites

But wish I was there. Can't wait to see photos.

The Summer Monsoons in Arizona

I was in Tucson and southwest where I captured some pics (see below). Someday lightning shots .

2007 was my 2nd year down to Tucson during July to visit my (former business partner and ) friends. My main intent was for me to photograph and videotape 14 different types of hummingbirds near the Sierra Vista area. I had a grand time doing that for 2 days. Gosh I love those little birds!!

BTW it is called Beatty's Ranch and they have reasonable rates for their bungalows. Very nice owners. If you all are down that way try it out but check ahead beforehand for availability. Nice restaurants nearby in Sierra Vista (Asian, Italian and more).

When you are in around the Tucson to Phoenix to Scottsdale you can also try the following (as I did);

First get a AAA book if you have one or borrow one for Arizona. I also purchased and used the Frommer book for Arizona.

* The Sonora Desert Museum near Tucson with fabulous flora and fauna. (I can't believe of all that I saw I missed the gila monster which I've always wanted to see!). A must!
* The Kitt Peak telescope obervatory buildings and telescopes ( I liked it - hey I do astronomy too!)
* go for night walks (check locally) or at the Desert Museum
* Kartchner Caverns state park (south of Tucson) - I have spelunked in many area of the USA and someday I will go there
* Southeastern Bird Observatory (south of Tucson)
* Make sure you try one of the fabulous restaurants (Poca Cosa in Tucson is one I want to go to but 2 years straight they were shut down for a few weeks when I was there). I had one of the best meals at the J-Bar (very reasonable this time of the year!) with their pecan encrusted chicken, lamb appetizers and the incredible chocolate jalapeno sundae!

Don't ever try to go across streams in streets etc that are started by rains and monsoons. Last year they had a dramatic rescue on live TV of a woman who did this and her car had water all the way to the roof before she knew it. She was standing on the roof of the car and a helicopter airlifted her off before car went down the river.

N and west after the hummingbirds, I was trying to find another hummingbird havenin Patagonia. I had taken pictures from afar of a rainstorm a couple hours before. Finally I found the place and was rounding the bend to go over the streambed to the place. This is what it looked like.

The water had risen from nothing and a drybed to feet! So I could not see the hummingbirds at that place that day (it was across the road) as I had to get back to Tucson. But this was an eye opener about Monsoons!

Noctilucent clouds

These mysterious  electric blue clouds started showing up in the US summer in  Canada and northern parts of Europe. Scientists still don't know how they form. They are 45 and 54 miles (75 and 90 kilometers high but if you  are in  the right high latitude area, they supposedly easy to see.
This year they are now being observed in Vermont, Wyoming and Michigan. Be on the look out for them and post if you see them.

Tunguska 100 years later:A space crime scene Astronomy CSI?

Astronomy CSI -A space crime scene ? On this anniversary was the object that hit Siberia on June 30, 1908, an alien spaceship, a black hole, a comet, a porous type asteroid? Tunguska explosion was 1,000 times more powerful than the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima but many scientists still are undecided on what caused it. The latest information hinted that it was a body 10 times that of the Titanic but now say it might have been smaller. Simulations seem to suggest a lesser explosion created the devastation as well. Now there are other theories but no defintive answers. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,373608,00.html

Houston we have a problem but the space shuttle is coming to the rescue

Houston we have a problem but the space shuttle is coming to the rescue.

The space shuttle is going up Saturday 5/31. It has a precious cargo to take up to the International Space Station (ISS) - parts for the Russian made toilet, which is not working well. There is only 1 toilet in the ISS and everyone has to use it.

The main toilet onboard the International Space Station is broken. "[It] works for solid waste disposal, but requires additional steps for liquid waste," says Kirk Shireman, deputy ISS program manager at NASA. The procedure for liquid waste "takes two crew members and 10 minutes of maintenance after three flushes."

"It is very inconvenient at this time because it requires a lot of manual intervention," Shireman said.
Fortunately, space shuttle Discovery is set to launch this Saturday with spare parts needed to restore normal operations:.

PS cost of new repair $19 million- and you thought your plumber was expensive!

Barn and Mercury

In Overland Park, Kansas near Olathe KS USA on 151st Street there is this neat lone Barn structure in a huge pasture field once filled with grazing cows. Now this field is giving way to houses, streets and more. I don't know how long this Barn will be around so I wanted to take a photo of it in an astronomical setting before it was demolished. I caught it as Mercury (right above it was sinking in the sky).First time I have photographed Mercury since I first saw it in 1963 in Providence RI one night.I hope to have more photos with the barn but at least I have Mercury with it. Mercury is mercurial and I hope not but I am afraid this barn will be gone soon from sight soon.Taken with Canon Revel EOS , 50 mm lens 6.3 f, 10 seconds.

International Space Station, Endeavor space shuttle and a red surprise photo

I've seen the ISS and Space Shuttle recently. But in 2004, I took an unexpected photo that I nicknamed the "Red Surprise." Comet Ikeya- Zhang was a fine comet in 2004 that I photographed and saw with my naked eye too. I took some pictures with one of the robotic telescope I use and waited for the next days pic. I was the comet in my picture on the right. Since I took it with a red filter there was not much of its tail showing. But what were thought 3 streaks diagonally on the left? I had no clue. So I used my Starry Night Pro software to find out. Finding that date and time, I found part of what I was looking for. A bright stripe with a lesser bright stripe next to it, was the International Space Station (ISS) and the Endeavor space shuttle. But what was the other one. Fiddling with the timer and going forward and backwards on this pass, I found it. A Soviet spacecraft happened to be passing right by in tandem. Fittingly I called it my "Red Surprise". While I've been to Moscow, Space City and had many surprises along the way, this a Soviet Union delight in another celestial and different way!

Could Saturn's moon Enceladus have oceans and life under its ice?

Creatures called extremophiles, live in very inhospitable places in the oceans near volcanic vents, in subfreezing climes and other places, have given us new insights about life. While the verdict is still out whether there was life on Mars in the past or present, scientists are looking elsewhere. One possible place is under the icy ridges of the Jupiter's moon Europa. But now Saturn's tiny moon Enceladus is showing interest.
Since a craft made it through the smog layed of Saturn's giant Moon Titan, new missions may hold more proof of what may be there. New evidence is finding that there may be liquid water seas maybe even containing containing organic molecules or life may once be discovered under Enceladus and Europa. Robotic crafts may someday drill and dive into these possible cap/ oceans to see what's done there.4/1 (if not date use archives)

How The Peruvian Meteorite Made It To Earth

By RSS on March 11th, 2008
The strange Peruvian meteorite has yielded some interesting conclusions that could change the what we know about the size and type of meteorites that can strike Earth. The Carancas fireball was a stony meteorite and kept on going at a great speed ( 15,000 miles per hour). The impact however was different because of this. More information about conclusions.

see an eclipse -"To Spark teens curiousity, do not disturb"

((c) photo by E.Flescher)

There was an interesting article in Sundays Kansas City Star (P.B9, 2/24/2008) under the Opinion page entitled "To Spark teens curiousity, do not disturb" by Rhonda Lokeman.

In the article, there is a photo of the eclipse in the sky over Macedonia from the Associated Press. But it is the content of the article that really said much more.

The lunar eclipse had caught the eye of this reporter's teenager. The eclipse captured her attention and pointed the eclipse to her mother. The reporter actually observed it because of the daughter's observation. "What matters to teenagers, as parents will attest, is the source of the suggestion. Parental suggestions are just not cool. "

This was also a night in which the military was to shoot down a rouge spy satellite (and succedded). The eclipse for this child was "cooler" then the interception and destruction of a satellite, which was the preoccupation of the reporter.

What is even better, is the daughter took extra time and creativity to take a picture with her camera on her phone! This she displayed to the reporter/ mother. The moment of observation was "captured" through images which many of us like to do with our digital cameras and videocamcorders to "relive" the moments of the eclipse, celestial object or other sights.

The daugher then sent it on to her friend with the camera phone. Her friend's response, predicatbly , came as a text message : "Kul"

We had a little more time to tell people about this eclipse. We weren't so fortunate with the Comet McNaught, (the brightest comet in 40 years), which only several of us, in the Northern Hemisphere, only saw for 4 days beforethe brilliant comet slipped into the skies of the Southern Hemisphere

I had sent information through my emails to relatives, blog, email listserves etc. My mother in Providence, RI saw it through her kitchen window. My brother in law saw it and telephoned me. I had told some of my students to watch for it and while they tried, the weather here in Overland Park was not good. While I lamented staying at Powell Observatory (near Louisbourg, KS and Kansas City area) as the clouds rolled in, I hoped others would see the eclipse. I should have tried to escape the clouds to see this lunar eclipse, as we did in Hungary 1999, to see the total solar eclipses of that year. Others had better luck North or in Missouri.

But like that teenager, I saw some of it and saw the orange-red hues on the moons surface like the eclipse in August 2007. I have my pictures and videos of that great 1999 eclipse and that past lunar eclipse. There are many words to express a beautiful sight. For older and young "Kul" says a lot.

Astronomers find solar system with Jupiter-Saturn configuration

For the first time, astronomers have found extrasolar planets in a far away system that has a Jupiter / Saturn like configuration like our own solar system . Microlensing is the relatively new process used by astronomers to spy these new worlds. Implications tell us that there are more planetary solar system like our own - out there. Auroras seen by Astronauts 200 miles above Earth

I've seen aurora before in the skies above Michigan, Maine and looking out through a window on a jet over Buffalo, NY looking toward Canada. The astronauts aboard the International Space Station took some recent pictures from their loft 200 miles above the Earth!

That was close! asteroid flies by Earth

That was close. Yesterday, newly discovered asteroid 2008 CT1 flew past Earth only 72,000 miles (0.3 lunar distances) away on 2/5/08. If it struck the 13-meter wide space rock ( size to a school bus) probably would have exploded in the atmosphere and showering an ocean with meteorites.

Tornadoes in February do occur: Latest outbreak

Colder months still breed tornadic weather . At least six tornadoes touched down between Oxford, Miss., and Jackson, Tenn., said a National Weather Service spokesman.

Monday 2/4/08 dawn celestial spectacle

On 2/1/08, Venus and Jupiter were very close together. I could not see it here in Kansas due to the clouds but others saw it.

I did photograph the pair with the Moon on 2/2/08. Taken with my canon digital rebel XT around 6:00 pm CT.
At this day, the planets were farther apart (then 2/1) but the Moon was more in view.

The planets and moon will look like this on Monday morning at dawn. Have a look at dawn.
